Toofaan Movie Review: Farhan Akhtar is Exceptional As Boxer Aziz Ali but The Film is just ok.
With Toofaan on Amazon Prime Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra again returns to the sports movie genre the boxing ring to be specific, after his 2013 movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag , which had Farhan Akhtar playing the legendary Olympian. Boxing guru Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal) tells Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar) who has extraordinary energy and speed but lacks technique, that he must consider the boxing ring as his home.
Ali a gangster from Dongri suburb of Mumbai is a loan collection agent who mostly uses violence as part of his work, thinks that boxing can help him become a stronger thug in the area. He approaches Prabhu for training, who is initially reluctant as Ali is a Muslim from Dongri, but later agrees to coach him.
Prabhu’s mindset against the community comes from the death of his young wife in a terror attack, which left his young daughter Ananya unhurt. He simply thinks that all Muslims are terrorists, despite his close friend who drinks with him almost daily Vinay (Mohan Agashe), repeating again and again that this can never be true. Prabhu is so strong in his belief that he does not order Chinese food from a Muslim owned restaurant.
Years later Ananya (Mrunal Thakur), who has come to be a doctor serving the poor and the needy at a charity hospital, meets Ali when he walks in with a wound on his head. When she learns that he has been in a fight she throws him out. As it is in movies the hindi movie Toofaan’s hero goes on to win boxing Matches and the girl’s heart. But then comes the second tragedy which is very unexpected and is written just to make Prabhu more adamant.
Toofaan unfortunately tries to bring in many issue into the story written by Anjum Rajabali and VIjay Maurya, causing it to drag. Editing is not upto the mark in some scenes. The Ali, Ananya love story, the father-daughter relationship and many songs make the plot weak.
Hindi Movies like Dangal and Chak de were more focused, while Hindi movie Toofaan tries to play with the viewer’s emotions to grab attention. Where Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has managed to get together a good cast. Farhan is very good as ‘Dada‘ from the Mumbai Suburb, Lover, Husband and Father. Thakur is also pleasant as a young girl with he smile and radiance, Rawal and Agashe play their roles well.
Toofaan is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, released on 16th of July 2021.
Other than this Toofaan lacks the boxing sprit. While you are at it you may read our review of the movie Fast and Furious 9 (F9) .
