Directed by debutant Samjad P.S, Latest Malayalam Movie Golam begins with ASP Sandeep Krishna (Ranjith Sajeev) returning home on a rainy night, apparently after arresting a criminal. Proving his bravery as a macho cop ready for action, we hear him conversing on the phone with one of his subordinates. He further says that superiors usually give orders without getting their hands dirty. In retrospect, this prologue perhaps hints that the protagonist, detective Sandeep, is not Poirot in this crime thriller that is clearly borrowed from the Agatha Christie classic, as he relies on brawn and not brains.
The film then quickly switches to a montage song, showcasing the diverse people working in an IT company in Kochi.
The movie follows their respective morning routines as they arrive at their workplace. We also soon meet the boss, Isaac John (Dileesh Pothan), who exudes unmistakable arrogance in his words and actions. This entire office-focused section takes on new meaning much later in the film when things become predictable after a perfunctory intermission. Siddique’s character then begins to unravel the mystery of John’s untimely death in the office bathroom during working hours. Malayalam Movie Golam features a wide range of supporting characters, all potential suspects, but ultimately feels distant from their concerns and needs.
However, unlike the main cast, it wasn’t a total failure as many of the ensemble performed well enough. Alancier Rey Lopez repeats his number from Thondimutthalum Driksakshiyum (2017), albeit superficially. Siddique sleepwalks through his role and delivers the explanatory monologues that accompany him, while Chinu Chandni is only partially impressive in the emotional scenes. After Turbo, Dileesh Pothan’s underwhelming performance here is a reminder that audiences will miss him terribly in the director’s chair.
Golam’s screenplay, co-written by Praveen Viswanath and Samjad, tries to portray Sandeep as an exceptional detective, but this characterisation doesn’t work as the revelations are handed to him on a silver platter, so ultimately it’s almost effortless for Sandeep to play the part of putting together the puzzle. Ranjith Sajeev’s consistently stoic facial expression and monotonous dialogue don’t help matters, but his well-toned physique is a perfect fit for the role of a movie cop.
As the film explores the motive behind the crime in the second half, it turns into a fairy-tale revenge tale with conspiracy theories and possible global implications linked to the machinations of Big Pharma. Give credit where credit is due, but what Golam lacks in a good script and engaging lead actor is somewhat made up for by debutant Samjad’s skillful narration.
With which released on 7th of June 2024 with a reasonable runtime of just under two hours, the film isn’t overly long. Abby Salvin Thomas‘ loud yet driving score also helps to soften the familiarity of the events. There seems to be a growing trend of ending Malayalam crime thrillers with a hint of a sequel. Abraham Ozlar and Thalavan are some recent examples. These epilogues usually have little to do with the main plot of the film. Golam Cinematography is by E Vijay, Editing : Mahesh Bhuvanend. Golam is no exception, but the film at least ends with a passage that leads directly to the main plot, even if you don’t want to see the sequel. Agatha Christie’s mystery thrillers are worth watching mainly for their clever plots and nuanced characters. Golam takes up the ideas of a legendary author, but it lacks such qualities, even if the film is ultimately a passable piece of movie making.
